A new lens or camera doesn't make the old one you have take any better photos. It really doesn't bring down the value of the equipment that much. Over time the 24-70 f/2.8 has come down (I'm pretty sure it was $2,000 at one point) it doesn't just magically drop when a new model comes out, it drops as they pay off the R&D and start up costs.
