Ifchanging the batteries doesn't work to restore power to your Xbox controller, try this: Turn off your Xbox One fully by pressing and holding the power button on the front of the system for 10 seconds. Unplug your console's power cable and leave it unplugged for a few minutes. Use a USB cable you know is good (try others if the first Imanaged to get it working by performing a restart on the xbox series x and as soon as the xbox logo appears power on the DD base into xbox mode. Then start AC and you should be able to control the xbox within AC using the wheel. You should then be able to setup the wheel in the AC settings.
